I applaud Netflix for doing this. I do think we are close to (or already at) a tipping point where there are just way too many subscription options in streaming. If I want to watch one show on a service that I don't subscribe to why do I need to sign up and join every time? That made sense at first but now every content company out there has a subscription. It's just too much.This is why I foresee over the next few years many of the subscription service streamers will follow this path by Netflix.
Advertising based options benefit both sides. Consumers get to see content they want to see without a long term financial commitment. Streamers can grow and audience, learn what content people like and make large sums of revenues from advertising, sponsorships and other non subscription revenue generating options.What's the point of creating amazing content if you put in a subscription only box that will limit the amount of people that can see it? In time all streamers will have an advertising based option for consumers.
